Writing camps are usually pretty quiet, but not this one. Our humor writing class was filled with laughing, jokes, improv games, and a lot of fun. We learned satire, joke format, comedic pacing, types of humor, and how to take something silly or witty and put it on the page. Our biggest accomplishment was writing a parody song together, “Baby, You Were Fired at Work” to the tune of Katy Perry’s “Firework.” The kids were all creative and funny, but they were also nice and kind to each other, which plays a big part in feeling open and comfortable enough to write great comedy.

Tom the Pair of Pink Scissors
by Liam Harris
Tom, the pair of pink, perpendicular pesky scissors, ate his breakfast, the same as every other meal of the day: paper. Tom hopped on the bus. He got dropped off at his day job as usual. He did not once hear a crusher in a bush, nor did he see metal stains on his boss, shredder’s shirt. Tom continued down the brightly lit, not at all mysterious hallway toward his office. Tom did not turn around to see a crusher with the remains of his boss on the ground and he had a very great day at work because he got a raise. He came home not at all worried and got some rest, very sure that nobody was watching him. Tom had not woken up because he had not once heard screaming from the basement. Tom slept happily and the same thing repeated the next day and the day after until…he went on vacation and returned to work the next week. Tom lived a long and happy life.
